Eyelid Lift Frequently Asked Questions
Known by many names, an Eyelid Lift is a remedy to excess fatty tissue and loose skin around the eyes. The primary goal is to achieve a more youthful outlook, however the procedure can also remove excess tissue to expand the line of sight. Eyelid Lifts can reduce bags under the eyes, correct drooping upper eyelids, smooth under-eye wrinkles, and enhance the eye shape. By tightening the eye muscles, Surgeons can also reduce the unnecessary load placed on the eyes. If you’re planning an Eyelid Lift, start your research with our FAQs.
Plastic Surgeons make every effort to conceal incisions in the natural creases of the eyes where possible. To perform an Upper Eyelid Lift, the incision is made along the fold of the upper eyelid. This line is sometimes visible immediately after surgery, but with the correct post-surgical care, it will fade to being almost invisible over time. Lower Eyelid Lift incisions can be made under the lower eyelashes, or inside the lower eyelid. This results in very minimal to no visible scarring.
Glasses can be worn straight after Eyelid Lift. Clients who normally wear contact lenses will have to wait for at least 2 weeks before recommencing wear—this is to reduce the risk of infection while the incision sites heal, and swelling subsides.
All clients heal at different rates and specific recovery time can vary. Generally, though, you can expect minor discomfort and light sensitivity for the first 2 to 3 days (sunglasses may be required) and bruising that can last up to a few weeks. In most cases, clients can resume driving after 5 days, and normal activities (including work) can recommence after 10 days. Your Plastic Surgeon will advise when it’s safe for you to exercise again.
When performing an Eyelid Lift, Surgeons aim to create a tighter, permanent eyelid crease. The results of surgery are long-lasting, and few clients need to have the procedure redone. The body will naturally continue to age—this means a reduction in the skin’s collagen and elastin levels and the chance of sagging skin, but the eyes will always look younger than if the surgery wasn’t performed.
Eyelid Lifts are minimally invasive. While everyone experiences pain differently, this procedure is one of the least painful Plastic Surgery procedures you can have. Some swelling and bruising may occur after your Eyelid Lift, and you may feel minor discomfort. This can be managed with low-dose pain medication if required.
Eyelid Lifts are performed under general anaesthetic and typically take between 1 to 2 hours. Specific timing is dependent on the complexity of your procedure and whether you’re having an Upper Eyelid Lift, a Lower Eyelid Lift, or both.
